Cost Breakdown for Master Bedroom Makeover

For those of you who feel like you aren't able to create the space that you really want because of your budget, read on.  I dream about the day when I can walk into a furniture store, choose my favorite set of furniture, pay for it, and walk out.  Today that is simply not that day for me.  In truth though, I'm not sure that I would really enjoy the pieces as much if I didn't put a little sweat and blood into them.  It really is so rewarding to have pieces that are unique, eclectic and best of all created by you.  If today is your first day stopping by the blog, here is a shot of the Master Bedroom that I just re-did.

Here is a breakdown of the components and total cost for this makeover:

  • Moulding: $194
    •  Chair rail- $55 (Lowes) We used a 3" wide casing  for our moulding, can be purchased here
    • Picture frame moulding- $126 (Lowes) We used a poplar shelf edging, can be purchased here,

    • Caulk and tape- $13,
    • Kwal Howell "High Hide White" paint in Semi-gloss- free to me (used a can we already had)
  • Paint: $66
    • (2) cans of Behr Ultra Paint and Primer in One in Satin finish- $66 The paint color was custom mixed at Home Depot to match Valspar's "Polished Silver".  I gave them the wrong swatch however (Valspar's "gravity" which was too light.  So after returning to HD for them to make the color darker, I ended with a perfect in-between from "gravity" and "polished silver"
    •  tape- free to me (had 2 rolls)
  • Night Stands: $113
    • (2) Henredon Night Stands, purchased on KSL- $80
    • (2) cans Rustoleum  gray primer, (2) cans Rustoleum "granite "spray paint in satin,  (1) can Rustoleum Metallic spray paint, (1) quart Ralph Lauren Regent Silver- approx $33
    • Glaze, protective coating and spray paint for hardware- free to me (already had in stock)

  • Lamps:  $31
    • (2) Better Homes lamps, purchased on clearance at Walmart- $18

    • (2) Drum lamp shades thrifted from local D.I.- $4

    • Approx 1 yard upholstery fabric for recovering shades, purchased at Home Fabrics- $6.99
    • Ribbon for finishing top and bottom, purchased with 40% off coupon from Joann- $1.50
    • Spray adhesive, glue sticks, Rustoleum Heirloom white spray paint, Kilz primer and protective coat- free to me (already had in stock)
  • Curtains and Rod: $18
    • Existing white Pottery Barn 82" curtains- Free (I already had these in our room before.  They were purchased about a year ago at Downeast Home for approx $15 each panel)
    • 7/8 yard Waverly Cross Section Fabric in "charcoal"- $16 (this was actually a total splurge because I wanted the fabric in time for the makeover so badly so I was forced to buy it from the only place in Utah who had the fabric in stock- Calico Corners.  However, this can be purchased online HERE for only $8.95 a yard)
    • Curtain Rod- $1.98, 1/2" metal conduit (This is the PERFECT solution to a cheap curtain rod.  It comes in a 10' piece so it's tough to maneuver, but all you need is a can of spray paint, some hooks, and decorative finials and viola; a curtain rod for much less)

    • Rustoleum Hammered Spray paint in Dark Bronze, finials and hooks for rod- free to me (already had in stock)
  • Bedding: $47
    • Polka dot satin upholstery fabric for Euro Shams, $17 (2.5 yards at $6.99/yard from Home Fabrics)
    • Light sage upholstery fabric for Standard Shams, $5 (1.5 yards at $3/ yard from Home Fabrics)
    • Decorative toss pillow from Target- $25, can be purchased HERE
    • White sheets, teal satin duvet cover and bed skirt- Free to me (already had)
    • White coverlet- Free to me (gift from an amazing friend)
  • Accessories: $70
    • Salt Lake City Temple print and frame from Poppy Seed Design, frame customized by PW- $50, can be purchased online HERE
    • Sunburst Mirror from Family Dollar- $10
    • (3) Frames above bed from Family Dollar- $9 (I removed the awful prints they had inside the frames and added my own scrapbook paper)
    • Small gold vintage picture frame from local D.I.- $0.50
The remaining items in the room that we already had are: Bed and  Wrought Iron Headboard (purchased at Pier 1 Imports over 10 years ago), IKEA white Hemnes Dresser, IKEA round mirror, Vintage kettle, Silver flower vase, French Wingback Chair (previously thrifted and reupholstered by PW for approx $200 total)

SOOO our grand total for this entire bedroom came to a whopping total of $539!!!

I also have been collecting these items slowly over time, so we didn't have to fork out all of the money at once. I realize that $539 is still a good chunk of money, but look at how much can be accomplished with that little if you are willing to look for deals and think of creative ways to use items you already have or find that may be intended for different purposes.  You wouldn't be able to walk into any regular furniture store and walk out with more than one item for that price

Are you ready to re-do your space for less? You can do it!

I would like to give a HUGE THANKS to all those who have taken the time to go and vote for my submission on Ivory Homes Facebook page.  I feel particularly honored to have Miss Mustard Seed, Remodelaholic and Recaptured Charm in my favor.  Thank you!

  15. I was looking for a reliable gemstone store and found Bismillah Gems online. Their yaqoot stone price in Pakistan is really competitive, and the stone I received was gorgeous. I’ve already noticed the yaqoot stone benefits , like better mental clarity and calmness. Highly recommend this store!
